Lego Transformers – Soundwave

In collaboration with Lego and Hasbro. As the lead and sole sound designer on the project, I personally crafted a selection of 30 voice phrases and sound effects. The toy contains a physical audio brick with 3 separate stories brought to life through these sounds.

I spent many sessions recording a talented voice actor to closely emulate the iconic 1984 performance by Frank Welker. First, I created a complex effect chain; a combination of pitch shifters, saturation, and other creative effects to get my voice actor into the same range and intensity as Welker’s voice, and then parallel vocoder processing to get the rich vocoder sound while maintaining enough of the evil growly timbre. I then did precise manual editing of each syllable to match the nuanced timing of Welker’s performance.

When designing the various mech SFX, I played with a combination of modern and vintage sound design. The laser gun sounds are created using an old physical technique where you attach a metal spring or slinky to a plastic dome. The mech sounds, on the other hand, are fully synthesized using modern techniques.
